Never Be

from Obsolescence by John Ludi

about

As this is reflective album (as opposed to the “wrathful” one called “Rage”), I decided to write a song about the things that I had desired for my life that had never actually happened, because I'm just that jolly a fellow.

As the lyrics started taking shape I thought of using archtypal characters...but characters that I have been in this life. (Yes, it IS kind of a pretentious move...so what?)

The Poet was the wish I had to do what everyone seemed to want to do in the 60's: save the world by writing JUST the right song. I felt that way in the 80's. Had I been making music in the 60's I would have been just as wrong...but the intent was noble, if hubris-filled.

The Lover was the desire I had from the time I became romantic in my teens to find an actual life partner...as opposed to what I ended up manifesting: variety. Mind you, it certainly is better than nothing...it's been quite the adventure...but it wasn't the adventure I wanted.

The Seeker was the yearning to break free from the ties of subjectivity and of being limited to this little monkey that I dance around in. I gave up on this one rather early as I realized that my life was going to be all about getting dirty in the trenches...not about living in an ashram.

And having lost these dreams there is a sadness wafting here and there...but as I have matured (or just gotten old) I have found myself with an inner contentment and a sense of being complete that I would not have expected in my wishful youth.

That has been a welcome and happy surprise.

As usual: all words, music, performances, engineering, and production by John Ludi. Yes...I did it all myself...in a yurt, no less.

lyrics

Never Be

The Poet looks for an answer to a world gone awry
crafting words, sculpting notions...with every tricks he’s learned he tries
“I’ll trigger some buried impulse to pull us back before the brink,
the spread of psychic revolution: sleepers rousing to think.”

The Lover searches for his other...the missing part of who is whole.
He wanders through confused connections for one to compliment his soul.
“Here you stand now before me and our defenses come undone
something in your touch restores me, as if life has just begun.”

Never be, never see, the dream recedes.
Never be, never see, yet still complete.

The Seeker yearns for the connection lost when each of us comes here.
He longs for his ascension absent of limits, doubts, and fears.
“I remove all hesitations, to this final step resolved.
I then extend in all directions as my boundaries dissolve.”

Never be, never see, the dream recedes.
Never be, never see, yet still complete.
